Google Search Console (GSC) is the primary tool for monitoring how Google crawls and indexes your store. Submitting your sitemap through GSC is one of the most impactful SEO actions you can take.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 1: Verify Your Site<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

  1. Go to Google Search Console<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Click Add Property<\/strong> and enter your store’s domain<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Choose a verification method:\n
      \n
    • HTML file<\/strong> \u2014 download and upload to your web root<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • HTML meta tag<\/strong> \u2014 add to your theme’s header template<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • DNS record<\/strong> \u2014 add a TXT record via your domain registrar<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Google Analytics<\/strong> \u2014 automatic if GA is already set up<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n

      Step 2: Submit Your Sitemap Index<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      2. In the left sidebar, click Sitemaps<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
      3. In the “Add a new sitemap” field, enter your sitemap index URL:\n

        • With .htaccess<\/code>: yourstore.com\/sitemap_index.xml<\/code><\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • Without .htaccess<\/code>: yourstore.com\/index.php?route=extension\/hbseo\/sitemap\/index<\/code><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • Click Submit<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

          \u2705 You only need to submit the sitemap index<\/strong> \u2014 not the individual sitemap files. Google follows the links in the index to discover all child sitemaps automatically.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

          Step 3: Monitor Indexing Status<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

          After submission, GSC shows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          • Discovered URLs<\/strong> \u2014 How many URLs Google found in your sitemaps<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          • Indexed<\/strong> \u2014 How many are actually in Google’s index<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          • Errors<\/strong> \u2014 XML parsing errors or URLs that returned errors when Google fetched them<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

            Using the URL Inspection Tool<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

            Use URL Inspection<\/strong> in GSC to check the index status of any specific page:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            1. Enter a product, category, or information page URL<\/li>\n\n\n\n
            2. GSC shows whether it’s indexed, when it was last crawled, and the canonical URL Google found<\/li>\n\n\n\n
            3. If not indexed, the tool shows the reason and lets you Request Indexing<\/strong> manually<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

              \u2139\ufe0f Google and IndexNow:<\/strong> Google is not currently a participant in the IndexNow protocol (as of early 2026). For Google, use the URL Inspection tool to request indexing of specific important pages, and keep your sitemap fresh and submitted.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
