Product Image SEO: Alt & Title

Give each product gallery photo its own clear description in every supported language. Manual values work without AI, and missing values can use safe fallbacks.

SEO Suite 4.6.0+No AI required for manual editingEach language separately

Main image or gallery image?

Main product imageEdit the main Alt Text and Image Title in the product's SEO fields.
Additional product imagesOpen Product → Images → Edit image SEO below each gallery thumbnail.

Set image descriptions manually

  1. Open a product. In OpenCart admin, navigate to Catalog → Products, then edit your product.
  2. Open the Images tab. Find the additional image you want to describe. If it is a new image, add it with the plus button.
  3. Click “Edit image SEO”. Every image has its own panel with language flags (for example English and French).
  4. Fill Alt Text and Image Title. Write what this image actually shows. You can complete either field independently in each language.
  5. Save the product. Use OpenCart's normal product Save. Reload the form to ensure the values were saved.
Example: If a product has a front view and a close-up of its controls, those are two different images. Describe the actual visible difference. A useful Alt Text is “Wireless speaker showing volume controls”; a less useful example is “speaker best speaker cheap buy speaker”.

How fallback works

It is fine to leave optional gallery fields empty. Alt Text and Image Title are handled independently for each language:

1Gallery image valueUse the image's own Alt or Title if entered
2Main image valueIf missing, use the main Alt or Title for that language
3Product nameLast fallback is the translated product name

Example: French gallery Alt Text can be blank while French gallery Title is custom. The Alt Text falls back without replacing the custom Title. English values are separate.

Generate missing values: Templates or AI

Templates — no AI key

Open SEO Suite → AI Content → Settings and choose Templates. Save the settings. Open the Templates tab and review your Product Image Alt Text and Image Title templates.

Use placeholders such as {name} as supplied by the template editor. Return to Product → Images and choose Generate missing values.

Know this: a simple product-name template may produce the same text for several views. Edit each suggestion to describe its actual photo.

AI — optional

Set up OpenAI, Gemini or Claude in Framework → AI Settings, test the API connection, and select AI in the AI Content settings.

Generate suggestions one language at a time. AI calls may be charged by your provider.

Know this: this text-based generation uses product data and the filename; it does not inspect the actual picture. Review the generated claims.

Manual text stays in control: “Generate missing values” fills inputs that are currently empty. To replace existing text, edit or clear that input first. You must still click the product's native Save button to store generated suggestions.

How to confirm it works on your storefront

  1. Enter different English and French Alt/Title values for two additional images, then save and reload the product form.
  2. Open the product's public page in your first storefront language.
  3. Right-click a gallery thumbnail → Inspect. Find the corresponding <img> element and read its alt and title attributes.
  4. Switch to another storefront language and check the same thumbnail. The values should match that language.
  5. Clear one gallery Alt Text (leave its Title), save, and verify the independent fallback.

A theme can create several image elements, including lazy-loaded thumbnails or a gallery pop-up. Inspect the element that actually displays the target photo. See the complete storefront testing guide.

Important limitations

  • Quick Editor: additional-image fields are intentionally not displayed there. Use the native Product → Images tab.
  • Duplicate gallery paths: when the same image file path is used twice within one product gallery, both rows use the same stored metadata.
  • Different products: the same image file can have separate text for each product.
  • Image Organizer: rename and undo handle image SEO metadata; undo after a subsequent native product save can be restricted by OpenCart's recreated image-row IDs.
  • Theme differences: default OpenCart markup is supported; for heavily customised themes such as Journal 3, confirm that their gallery markup shows the expected attributes.
  • Image Title is optional: writing useful, truthful Alt Text and having a working accessible image is more important than repeating keywords in Title.
Not seeing “Edit image SEO”? First confirm the product has an additional image row, that SEO Suite setup completed after the update, and that you're viewing the native Product → Images tab. A product with no additional images has no gallery panels until you add an image.
